Home security basics: simple steps that deter break-ins

Good home security is mostly about making your house a harder, less attractive target, and it does not need to be expensive. Start with the basics before spending on gadgets.

The short version: strong doors and locks, good lighting, visible deterrents, careful habits and good neighbours do more than most expensive systems. Add cameras or monitoring if they suit your needs.

Doors and locks

Most break-ins happen through doors. Use solid doors, a quality deadbolt and a strike plate fastened with long screws into the frame. Reinforce sliding doors with a bar or pin. Change the locks or codes when you move in, because you do not know who has keys.

Windows

Make sure windows lock properly, and add secondary locks or pins to ground-level windows. Window film or laminated glass can slow entry. Keep basement windows secure.

Lighting and landscaping

  • Use motion-activated lights at entrances, the driveway and the yard.
  • Trim shrubs so that they do not hide doors and windows.
  • Use timers or smart plugs to make the home look occupied.

Cameras and alarms

Video doorbells and cameras can deter and document, and monitored alarms can bring a response. Compare costs, subscription fees and privacy. Point cameras at your own property, not at neighbours' windows, and check local privacy rules.

Habits

  • Lock doors and windows, even when you are home or away briefly.
  • Do not hide spare keys outside; leave one with someone you trust.
  • Do not post travel plans on social media.
  • Pause mail and deliveries when away.
  • Keep valuables out of sight from windows.
  • Secure the garage, including the door to the house.

Neighbours

Know your neighbours and ask them to watch your home when you travel. Neighbourhood watch programs and local police crime prevention advice can help.

Insurance

Tell your insurer about alarm systems, since some offer a discount. Keep a list or photos of your belongings to help with a claim.

Example

A simple package of a deadbolt with long screws, motion lights and a camera at the front door can cost far less than a full monitored system, while covering the most common weak points.

Costs vary, so compare options.
