How the land transfer tax calculator works
Land transfer tax is a one-time tax paid when you buy a home. In most provinces it is worked out in brackets: a lower rate on the first part of the price and higher rates on the rest.
Some cities add their own tax on top, as Toronto does, and Montréal uses its own brackets for its welcome tax. Some provinces give first-time buyers a rebate or exemption. Alberta and Saskatchewan do not charge land transfer tax, but they charge land title or registration fees, which this calculator shows.
Choose your province, enter the purchase price and the result updates. The table compares the same price across provinces. These are estimates, so confirm the exact amount with your lawyer or notary.
